Prototype Model with Design Statement

design statement

Waste management in Vietnam in general and Ho Chi Minh city specifically is a seriously concerning issue. There has been so many solution that have been suggested yet nothing has been done to reduce the impact of the problem. Hugh amount of waste are released daily by residents or businesses, landfills in Ho Chi Minh city has yet to change their way to deal with garbage, which cause them to keep burying garbage instead of classifying each type of trash and have different plants to deal with different types of wastes. Landfill odor is also a concerning problem regarding the waste management issue. Garbage odor does not only comes from landfill but also from overfilled garbage bins and garbage collecting trucks. Considering this issue, the Underground Waste Treatment System is a design solution that could be worth looking at. The design consists of a system of pipes which connect directly to fixed garbage bins on the streets. As garbage is thrown down the bin, the garbage went directly down the pipe system and into a garbage classifying machine underground which automatically separates different types of waste. Then the separated wastes are sent to suitable underground plants for suitable treatment. As the system is underground, there is no more worry for the landfill odor “attacking” residential areas nearby. Garbage are sent directly to the waste management treatment facility, therefore there will be less garbage collecting trucks roaming on the streets spreading garbage odor. Moreover, there will be less incident where people randomly put trash on the sidewalks because of many overfilled garbage bins. However, comparing to the lenses, the design can be costly and can only be installed for certain residential areas with high population.

prototype model

As I’ve said in the post before (Design Poster), I have decided to make a prototype model instead of drawing illustration for the two design posters because my wacom and laptop have problems connecting, and there is not much time left.

The prototype model that I made was based on the sketch for the design poster. I think it is also a good idea to make a model so that every detail on my sketch can be seen more easily.
